  2. Can be a very good news to built very light 2S brushless setup, but new 0804 motors are now proposed: https://www.banggood.com/BrotherHobby-0804-10000KV-12000KV-15000KV-1-2S-Brushless-Motor-for-RC-Drone-FPV-Racing-p-1258461.htmlThey are 3.5g and are 2S compatible.

Three variants are offerred 10000KV, 12000Kv and 15000Kv. No information if all of them are 2S compatible…. and unfortunatly no information about their thrust performances…. I hope they can deliver more than 50g in 2S…. We could expect to see powerfull 2S machines around 50g AUW with such new motors.

    INTRODUCTION

The iRangeX IR8M is the new cheap radio integrating directly the 4-in-1 multimodule coupled with DeviationTX. Thanks to this magic combinaison, you can control hundred of different machines and protocols. It’s a “quasi” universal radio transmitter. The radio comes after the Jumper T8SG, the first introducing this concept. Compared to the T8SG, we have more a gamepad style radio chassis, a larger screen more swiches and better gimbal ball-bearing based. Let’s check this new radio.

    BOX CONTENT

    null

    + 1 x iRangeX IR8M
    + 1 x 2.4G FlySky AFHDS-2A receiver
    + 1 x Receiver cable
    + 1 x USB to mini-USB cable
    + 1 x Allen key

No instruction manual…… It’s strongly advised to visit first the DeviationTX homepage: www.deviationtx.com

    null

    OVERVIEW

The full caracteristic of the transmitter is written on the back side of the box. The 4-in-1 multimodule with the CC2500, the CYRF6936, the A7105 and the nRF24L01+ is here…. This great piece of electronic mainly developped by DeviationTX’s gurus and copied by a chinese chip maker is the core of this radio. Thanks to this chip a lot of protocols can be selected via the OS… several hundread of machine can be flew with and the most important radio protocols are already present: FrSky D8/D16, Spektrum DSM2/X, FlySky AFHDS-2A, Futaba S-FHSS.

    null

First suprise, the DeviationTX version installed in the IR8M is a (modified) versio, of the Jumper T8SG…. It means that the compatibility with DeviationTX is almost here out of the box :).

    null

In comparaison with the Jumper T8SG, the I8RM is much more larger….

    null

The Jumper’s screen is much smaller but with better backlight capacity. The IR8M screen can be almost invisible in strong day lights.

    null

    null

On shoulders, two pots and two 2-way switches

    null

    null

Notice my pots are black while for some IR8M they are silver. Unfortunatly the dot reference point is not perfectly aligned with radio chassis. Maybe it can be tuned by removing the pot with the provided Allen key. Notice also for some I8RM, some 3-way switches have been installed instead of two-ways… Strange…. Clearly, the first batch of the IR8M lacks of consistency in term of hardware.

    null

In the main battery bay, you can find a tray for 4xAA.

    null

    null

    null

Unfortunatly, the connector is the balancer plug… so you won’t be able to connect directly a 2S LiPo. It’s a 3 pad 2.25mm connector where only the on the right are used. The red wire is a +7.4V or 4×1.5V if connected via AA batteries.

    null

You will have to design you own cable first to use a 2S LiPo.

    -WEIGHT
With the four AA installed, the machine is close to turn around 500g… so 100g more than the Jumper with a 2S LiPo installed inside.

    null

It’s not a big deal breaker and far to reach the 1Kg for a Taranix + the IRangeX IR4X+ module combo.

    null

    null

    null

    Disassembling

The two latteral rear rubber elements must be first unclipsed to access to the four screws hidden behind.

    null

Use a good screwdriver, I noticed that the quality of these screws are relatively bad… You can damaged them easily.

    null

First surprize the multi-module is not shielded. They removed the top metallic casing. I don’t know why… it’s not a question of space to fit the radio…. Strange because, the radio transmission performances can be (deeeply) negatively impacted.

    null

    null

At least the 2.4G antenna is attached with a uFL/iPX connector. It will be super easy to change another coaxial cable in order to install more an external antenna. The actual antenna is hidden read the main PCB but is at least folded

    null

All buttons, switches, dial are linked with connectors to the main PCB. A P11 connector is free maybe to connector another switch ?

    null

The same on the throttle side with the B1. The gimbal system has ball bearing but is basic. Notice the sping tension is not very important and in order to limit dead zone, it’s a good idea to fasten more the corresponding scews.

    null

No problem to change the radio into mode 1…. It takes a couple of minute. You will have also to change the setting in DeviationTX

    null

UNBOXING, ANALYSIS, DEVIATIONTX UPDATE, CONFIGURATION AND TESTING

First contact with the radio is relatively good with this large screen and this improve grab capacity. The swiches also are better than the Jumper with different lengths to not be too much in troubles when wearing some FPV goggles. I prefer also the metallic stick more longer than the basic plastic of the Jumper. For me the sping system look good…

What is really strange is for example the left shoulder switch is connected to the left dial. First thing you need to calibrate correctly the radio. If you plan to use only the dial, don’t touch the two shoulder swiched during the calibration. If you plan to use only the two shoulder swiched, don’t touch the dial… It’s strange but original. You can also touch both during calibration. You can in this case have a two behaviour of the dial according to the swich position, one with linear scaling, the second with a very strong expo value. The problem I see with this setting is the need to regulary recalibrate the sticks to select one of the three combinaison.

After a couple of minutes, you can find one the main problem of this radio… As soon as you turned off the radio and want to turn on it quick after… the radio refuse to be turned on….. You will need to wait about 10s… or disconnect the battery plug… It can very problematic in flight situation. The problem comes main probably from a caps in the voltage regulation circuit who don’t flush fast enought. One trick could be solder a wire and touch the main metallic chassis to fush the cap faster…. It’s not a big deal IHMO.
Another problem concerns the deadzones of the sticks. First…. out of the box, the deadzones are smaller than the Jumper’s ones …. but not yet perfect despite multiple recalibrations. You can a bit improve the situation if you
    1) fasten more the springs
    2) fasten more the screws locking the internal pots in gimbals

Notice also the Battery voltage alarm is not set correctly. It’s set to 7.4V synonym of 2S LiPo usage… or here by default you will use (rechargeable) AA batteries. Please change this value to 4.6V. I also not noticed any vibration capacities.

If you try to update directly the IR8M with the last Jumper’s NB, unfortunatly you will got a black screen sign of too high contrast setting.

    null

Furtunatly, it’s a basic setting to change in the LCD.c file and vlad_vy already produced a special build for the IR8M: https://www.deviationtx.com/forum/builds/7605-irangex-irx-ir8m-builds

This one works flawless but you will need immediatly to recalibrate the sticks, turned on the vibrations and set the correct battery voltage alarm.

    CONCLUSIONS

Basically the I8RM improves most elements versus the Jumper T8SG: larger screen, better grab, better swiches and better sticks/gimbal…. The multimodule works fine and please update the last DeviationTX build to enjoy more protocols and protocol compatibilities. The two main concerns are about the no power on after a quick turn off… mainly linked with a problem in the circuit design and the second is remaining presence of deadzone in the sticks whatever the introduction of ballbearing. Personally, I can overcome easily these two negative points and take the IR8M as my daily radio. I like the price, the samel than the Jumper radio but in bonus a small FlySky receiver. One last point, be aware in a couple of weeks, the Jumper T8SG+ will be available with Hall effect gimbals but sold around 110USD.

    PROS

+ Builtin Multi-Module 4-in-1 to control hundreds of protocols
    + Better hands grab
+ Better gimbals with ball-bearings than the Jumper T8SG ones (but not yet perfect)
+ Metal sticks better than the Jumper T8SG ones
    + Larger LCD screen
+ Switches more easy to manipulate than the Jumper T8SG ones
+ 2 More switches than the Jumper T8SG
+ Sticks dead zones more limited vs the Jumper T8SG ones (but not yet perfect)
    + iPX/uFL connector for the 2.4G antenna
    + 2.4G receiver provided with
+ Shoulder switch & dial coupled togather (can produce interesting behaviour)
+ Same price than the Jumper

    CONS

    – Can’t repower on immediatly after a turn off
    – Shoulder switch & dial coupled togather (need regulary stick recalibration)
    – No vibrations
    – No metallic shield on the 4-in-1 multimodule
    – Batt voltage set for 2S LiPo not for 4xAA
    – No 2S balancer plug
    – 100g heavier than the T8SG
    – Quality build inconsisty for the first batch

  4. Was predicatable but after the upgrade of the Tiny 6 into the Tiny 6x with larger motors, now we have the same operation with the Tiny 7X: https://www.banggood.com/KINGKONGLDARC-TINY-7X-75mm-FPV-Quadcopter-With-820-Motors-5_8G-800TVL-Camera-F3-Flight-Controller-p-1257764.html

With the same 75mm frame, they managed to install 8.5mx20mm motors instead of 7mmx20mm. 5g extra grams are added but performances will be greatly boosted. The Tiny 7x is announced to weight 35.6g without battery an receiver so expect a total weight flirting around 50-52g with the 450mAh LiHV battery. Still no builtin OSD 🙁 🙁 added… With an expected weight of 50g+ … the question of the brushless equivalent is really raised… and if it can be used indoors in super tiny spaces as well…. They offer a new choice of receiver. Now two FUTABA receivers are supported, a FASTT and S-FHSS one. The classic FrSky D8, FlySky AFHDS-2A and Spektrum are still supported.

  5. DYS will introduce soon the successor of their ELF, a popular large 100mm brushless TinyWhoop class machine: https://www.banggood.com/DYS-Shark-Mako-100mm-FPV-Racing-Drone-BNF-F4-Flight-Controller-5_8G-25200mW-VTX-Blheli_S-18A-ESC-p-1257440.html

They upgraded most parts… First the main chassis seems to be fully pastic… probably a good news because the carbon chassis with 1mm of thickness was really fragile. The flight controller is upgraded to a F4 model but no information if a builtin OSD is also here. Now ESC are 15A-18A models 3S compatible… For the 5.8G rig, the same 25mW/200mW 40CH VTX coupled with the same CMOS camera. There are two versions: one BNF with FrSky D8 receiver and a RTF coming with a 3S 600mAh and a basic radio. IMHO the RTF version is too expensive… It’s better to take the BNF with for example the new Jumper T8SG+.

  6. Here is probably my next radio … even if it can be the IrangeX IR8M (review coming very very soon from now), the new revision of the super great Jumper radio:
    https://www.banggood.com/Jumper-T8SG-Plus-V2_0-Multi-protocal-2_4G-12CH-OLED-Transmitter-for-Flysky-Frsky-DSM2-Devo-Futaba-p-1257102.html

    Jumper_T8_SG_plus_V2_0_4

    Jumper_T8_SG_plus_V2_0_5

They upgraded almost all elements. From now, the gimbal are HAL versions so without any contact offering super precise coding. The LCD screen is also increased, more larger.
Switches are also upgraded in location, in size and two extra are added. Dial buttons also are better located. More, there is a JR bay to welcomes a potential new external module (controled via PPM).
DeviationTX is of course the main OS and as far I know, this new revision has been developped with the help of the main DeviationTX gurus for a better support. The Multimodule 4-in-1 is still the core of the machine. I don’t know if it’s a new revision fixing protocols with original XN297L @250Kbit/s. Since the XN297L is not one of the four RF chip present inside the main multimodule, these (few) protocol are emulated with the nRF24L01+. In practice, the clock precision is not enough precise to perfectly emulate the XN297L@250Kbit/s… In any case, the radio is really great…. and the new gimbal should completly eliminate the small deadzones found with the first edition. The new revision is 50g more heavier … nothing catastrophic.

  7. Today one more time a new brushless FPV racer is announced in 145mm format: https://www.banggood.com/FlyFox-Blue-Fox-145mm-FPV-RC-Drone-w-F4-Built-In-OSD-20A-BLHeli_S-RunCam-Micro-Swift-2-BNF-p-1257049.html

We have a strong machine with 3mm carbon main arms/plate equiped of 1506/4100 Kv motors, so even more faster than the 1506/3500 of the Furibee Geniuser 160 for example. The flight control is a F4 + OSD model. ESC are ranked 20A… strong enough for 4S setup. The FPV system is based on the Runcam Micro Swift 2 coupled with a 48CH 5.8G VTX outputing a maximum of 200mW.

  8. A new FPV goggles will be soon introduced from FlySky, the Falcon FG01: https://www.banggood.com/Flysight-Falcon-FG01-2D-3D-169-43-FPV-Goggles-Glasses-Built-in-DVR-HD-Port-for-RC-Drone-p-1256928.html

This model is more a direct competitor of the Skyzone SKY02 V+, aomway commander V1 and more probably with the last Fatshark. Here we have a DFOV of 33 degrees so paradoxally a pretty good choice… especially with when we know than with ultra large FOV the image can be out of focus without corrective diopter. The main features are great… external receiver bay and receiver module compatible with existing Fatshark ones, builtin screens are 854×480 (WVGA) with 350 cd/m2. Builtin DVR abd can display an HDMI source. There is Builtin fan as well. The IPD can be ajusted from 59mm up to 69mm. Finally aspect ratio can selected between 16:9 and 4:3 sources. Look promising …. Wait & See.

    INTRODUCTION

As you probably already know, Furibee delivered a good sequence of excellent brushless FPV racers: from compact 1S setup up to 230mm and more. Here is a new candidate in the 160mm category with the Furibee Geniuser 160. With this racer with have a full carbon based racer with an elongated X-design. The electronic elements are also up to date with a F4+OSD flight controller, 28A BLheli_S/Dshot600 ESC 4-in-1 board 4S ready, 1506/3400KV motors. The FPV rig is also on top with a 5.8G 48CH VTX able to switch between 25mW/100mW or 200mW. More the FPV camera is a clone of CCD Runcam Swift model, only 600TVL but with an excellent light sensitivity and WDR. Let’s now discover this new serious candidate…

    BOX CONTENT

    null

    + 1 x Furibee Geniuser 160
    + 1 x 5.8G Pagada antenna
    + 1 x USB charging cable
    + 1 x Battery strap
    + 1 x Anti-slicing band
    + 4 x Spare props (2 CW, 2 CCW)
    + 1 x Wrench remover tool
    + 1 x Instruction manual (English)

The wrench tool is crucial to install props.

    null

Two bags of 3″ props…. A black set and another transparent.

    null

    OVERVIEW

From the first contact, you can feel that the Geniuser 160 is a durable and rock solid….. Everything is in carbon, 3K based. The general design is not a strict X shape but more elongated in the x-abscisse. The general quillity build is above the average… That’s a good start.

The main lower plate is 3mm model super strong…..

    null

linked with aluminium standoff to the 2mm upper plate.

    null

    -FRONT VIEW
    null

    -SIDE VIEW
    null

The main three layers tower. The central is the F4 one with the microUSB port. Betaflight 3.2.0 is pre-installed and well tuned out of the box except for the OSD informations where by default every elements are displayed polluting the screen.

    null

The lower one is a 4-in-1 28A model with peak up to 35A!!!!. No problem to support 4S and probably more. There is also a 3A/5V BEC… so largely enough to power the VTX rig and the receiver.

For the top board, it’s a 5.8G 48CH VTX with one unique button. There are two row of lights: one blue associated with the Vband selection and the green with the Vfreq. Each combinaison are coded in binary over three light digits.

    null

Short press to cycle between the 8 Vfreq inside the current Vband…, Long press more than 4s to switch to the Vband selection… then cycle between Vband by short pressing….. Wait a couple of seconds the selection. Finally press and hold more than 10S to select one of the three output power of the VTX between 25mW, 100mW (default) and 200mW. In VTX power selection mode, both the green and the blue light become solid.

Notice the position of the 5.GG antenna, directly exposed to a crash…. At least the antenna is not directly connected to the VTX but via a small coaxial cable.

    null

Two LED lights surrounding a buzzer is installed.

    null

    null

The compact FrSky D8 receiver is installed. The bind button can be pressed directly. In another hand, the receiver blocks the two VTX light information rows.

    -WEIGHT
A little bit less than 160g standalone…. With a 500-600mAh 4S LiPo you can have the machine under the 250g limitation.

    null

    Motors and props

First important remark, it’s super hard to install and fasten perfectly the 5″ props into the main 5mm shaft. The prop thread don’t offer any free room to an easy installation. You will need to use the wrench tool while blocking the motors with hands…. It requires handy force and will hurt your fingers.

    null

    null

    null

    null

    Camera module

The camera is a CCD model, a direct clone of the Runcam micro swift …There is a possibility to install an OSD cable to tune some parameters. By default, the language is chinese. The camera offers a FOV of 120 degrees and sensivity around 0.01Lux.

    null

    null

The lens can be oriented up to 60 degrees approximatively.

    null

On the right, the free 2-pin connector where to plug the OSD cable.

    null

    Disassembling

Super easy to access to the main electronical tower. Just remove the four top M2 hexscrews.

    null

Both the VTX, camera and receiver are connected via connectors… A good point for maintenance or for example to swap the actually basic FrSky D8 receicer to another more advanced with better range and telemetry feedback (a FrSky XM+ for example)

    null

    The OSD cable plugged.

    null

    null

UNBOXING, ANALYSIS, BINDING, CONFIGURATION AND DEMO FLIGHT

First positive observation, out of the box, most important elemements are well tuned in betaflight. i.e the SBUS receiver on UART3 and the Dshot600 selected. PIDs are default from BF 3.2.0. The two rear Lights also are pre-configured to stay solid. Only the OSD presents a problem where all possible OSD informations are displayed inviding completly the screen. Basically, as unique fine tuning required is the the optimization of the OSD layout. Unfortunatly the FrSky receiver don’t send any RSSI or Vbat by telemetry…. More no RSSI on the 9th channel as well to display the RSSI on the OSD…. That’s a drawback.

As you will be able to see, the FPV signal is cristal clear…. sharp and precise…. No interferences coming from a bad VTX… That’s great.

Even more…. absoluptly no jello can be noticed… it’s super smooth ….. I tested in 4S setup with a 500mAh LiPo…. The machine can carry a larger model. A 700-800mah represents a good tradeoff. In angle, it’s stable and drifts are super small. In 4S… the machine starts to hover from 30% in throttle input. ….It’s impressive… You can feel a lot of power from your finger’s extreminity….. Punch out are just insane !!!!!! OMG 🙂 I like this machine …. It’s screaming loud !!!! Well everything is not perfect, the performances of the current receiver is basic…. It’s strongly recommanded to swap if for a more powerfull model… With a 4S 500mAh LiPo I observed a flight duration about 3min15 in average……

    CONCLUSIONS

It was long time I didn’t been dispointed by a machine …. and it’s the case for the Furibee Geniuser 160… It’s a durable solid, powerfull machine with a great FPV rig able to carry a small Mobius Mini on top. It’s a great acro flyer very fun to fly with. No real negative point except maybe the basic FrSky D8 pre-installed for the BNF…. (should be replaced with a better model).

    PROS

    + Great flyer
    + Solid & durable
    + F4 with OSD
    + Good CCD FPV camera
    + Jellofree
    + Powerfull motors
    + Switchable VTX output power
+ Well tuned out of the box

    CONS

    – FrSky D8 receiver without RSSI
    – Props hard to install
    – Antenna stem exposed
    – OSD badly configured

  10. Ok … the official announcement will be in less than 20h…. but there are some leaked photos emerging for the new DJI Mavic Air

    DJI_mavic_air_1

    DJI_mavic_air_2

    DJI_mavic_air_3

    DJI_mavic_air_4

According the few first elements …. seems to be a super compact model…. just slightly larger than the DJI Spark…. Got a 3S battery, 25min of flight time, Obstacle avoidance in the menu, 4K video shooting and …. seems to have a 3-axis gimbal…. but I am not completly … could be only a 2-axis…. IMHO the total weight shouldn’t exceed more than 400-500g… If everything is confirmed ….. it will be another DJI killer product…. My god competitors must be so depressive actually….. Ok just 20h to wait before official announcements…. Wait & See

    INTRODUCTION

Just after the TopFX F7X and just before the new Aomway commander V2, the Eachine EV200D, and the new Skyzone SKY03 offers a huge diagonal FOV of 43 degrees !!!! This must be compared with the 32 degrees of the former SKY02 V+ for example. The new FOV is not the unique novelty… The DVR module is also upgraded to record in H264 format the RF feed or any AVin source. The Sky03 still of course offers a builtin 48CH diversity 5.8G VRX, a frontal VGA camera, a builtin headtracker, the possibility to display an HD source via a miniHDMI plug and support 2D/3D Side By Side. Two other addings… a frontal horizontal LED bar light and antifog fan…. Let’s star to discover this new deluxe FPV goggles….

    null

Only one of the three facial addon foam masks has a double side tape.

    OVERVIEW

The goggles chassis is more or less the same as for the SKY02.. the general plastic quality is great, very well build. You can find the Sky03 in black or white.

    -FRONT VIEW

Immediatly visible the Sky03 integrates now a Fan on top as AntiFog solution. Unfortunatly no manual switch to turn on/off it. In practice you can adjust the rotation speed only via a setting in the general menu interface.

    null

The white bar is the long horizontal LED light turned off by default. A lof of different visual effect can be selected in the general menu. Definitively a “cool” feature 🙂

    null

The frontal camera is a basic CMOS VGA model with a limited FOV of 60 degrees. Despite being basic, it’s very usefull to monitor the front event especially at landing or take off periods.

    null

    -SIDE VIEW
Another novelty, now there is a powerbutton to be pressed more than 4s to turn on/off the goggles.

But the size is compatible with typical diopters available in the market.

    null

The PS-2 connector for the builtin headtracker module… working in PPM mode.

    null

The main ports remain the same… Except the microHDMI has been replaced with a miniHDMI. We can fin a microUSB port to retrieve recorded file and to eventually flash a new firmware for the DVR. A microSD card port is also here… Be aware only good class 10 cards are accepted…. If not, when you will press on the “REC” button, nothing appears … or recordings stop after 1-2s maximum.

    null

    -WEIGHT
    null

    null

    Close to 240g….

    null

    Builtin Screens

Each LCD screen offers a 800×600 resolution…. so in theory less than the 1280×1024 of the F7X’ LCOS screen. Anyway, the LCOS technology implies polarisation mirrors… and introduces some artefacts blurring a bit the general quality… So the main question for large FOV goggles: Is-it better to have a lower native resolution with a direct projection or an higher resolution but with mirroiring ?

Here is a direct view inside the goggles for an NTSC

    null

in comparaison with the former SKY02 V+

    null

It’s obvious that the FOV is largely increased…. The immersion is impressive. The aspect ratio is also in 4:3 format…

In comparaison with the 16:9 format for the TopFX F7X

    null

I did a test with with these basic OSD information displayed in each four corners

    null

For NTSC, it seems that the signal is partially cropped at each border, especially for the left and right borders….with few lines removed.

    null

For PAL source rendition, we have for the SKY03

    null

    vs the SKY02 V+

    null

    and the TopFX F7X

    null

    With the following PAL layout

    null

    we obtain

    null

For PAL… it’s more top & botton parts which are slightly cropped…

Anyway, whatever the TV system…. I find that the video signal is partially blurred when you wear the glasses especially in the central area. More whatever the IPD ajustement, you still have the feeling that the video is a bit doubled……. Clearly I am not sure that the default provided diopter provided by default are the right ones for normal view capacity. I asked to 2-3 other persons with perfect vision to confirm my impression (in comparaison with the Sky02 V+ results)… All of them confirmed my remarks. Paradoxally, when you look with one eye only one of the screen, the image rendition is perfect….

I also tested the AVin capacity… No problem to display an extern CVBS source…. More, you can record the external flux via the DVR

    null

It’s a great little feature…. But dislike the SKY02 V+, the SKY03 won’t turn automatically when you plug a source in the AVin… you need to select manually the input into the AVin mode.

I was able to display without problem an HD source via the HDMI connexion… I tried different resolution from my laptop… each time successfully

    null

For the SKY03 model, Skyzone gave up their former 3D system with a dual Vfreq to a more classic Side By Side

    null

When you turn the goggle into 3D (long press the “mode” button, the 3D effect is perfectly rendered

    null

    MENU AND FUNCTIONS

If you long press more than 4s the large left “Camera”‘ button, you can run the band scanning. The process to overview the 48CH is relatively fast, less than 5-6s to scan everything. More a bar display is plotted with the #CH in the x-axis and the corresponding RSSI value in y-axis.

    null

After the scanning, you can manually navigate into each Vfreq by pressing the “Rec” & “Mode” buttons. To quit the scanning mode, one more time long press the “Camera” button.

On the right side, if you long press this time the “Track” button, you enter in the main menu with five different panels.

The first one is dedicaced to headtracker module

    null

The second more to the display settings: brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, sharpness

    null

The third tunes the DVR where you can for example perform “cycling recording” replacing previously recorded file as soon as the microSD card is full. You have the option to start recording as soon as the goggles are turned on as well…

    null

The fourth selects some OSD settings and the LED bar display mode. A lot of are available, around 25 different choices.

    null

The last one controls the speed of the fan… without the possibility to turn off it completly… the minimum setting is “ultra low”….

    null

    UNBOXING, ANALYSIS AND TESTING

When you turn on the Sky03, the skyzone log appears during 3s. With the facial mask installed, the sky03 is really confortable. The buttons are easy to access. But as said previously, I felt not super confortable in term of focus…. for me the central section is a bit blurred and despite any PID ajustement, the left & right images superposition is not perfect with a very small presence of a doubling effect…. Well absoluptly nothing catastrophic don’t worry…. I am pretty sure with more adapted diopters (-400, -600 ?) the focus can be solved. As far I know it’s a problem more or less similar with the Fatshark HD3… Seems it’s really hard to produce a large FOV goggles with so small eyes-screens distance.

A raw example of an NTSC source

Notice the NTSC source is saved in 720×480 @25fps !!!… In general NTSC are saved into 30fps. The video looks a but choppy by moment… Clearly less good than any NTSC source recorded smoothly @30fps… I hope it can be solved by a firmware update. I least no desynchronization with an HD source… a good point for Picture in Picture post video editing.

    null

More I noticed, sometimes the file stops by itself to record or produce a corrupted file …. Generally the DVR seems sensitivive to the quality/brand of the microSD card… I hope it won’t be like the walkera vitus where it was very hard to find a 100% compatible microSD card.

    For PAL source,, we have

    null

More time to time, the DVR refused to boot….and I needed to turn on one more time the goggles… sometimes, when you press recording, it starts to record but it stops by itself after a couple of second… Clearly, the DVR module seems sensitive to the microSD card choice. I used Toshiba Excecia pro U3 with a writing speed of 80mb/s for my testing so far superior to the 5kb/s required for the recording whatever a PAL or NTSC source.

    CONCLUSIONS

Well …. I got mixed feeling with the new Sky03 model… If clearly I liked the general quality build, the accesories, all functionalities FPV oriented, all input/output ports…. the general quality of the screens, the capacity the display perfectly an HD source… I can’t not mention the little blurring/out of focus feeling I have when i wear them…. With an high probabitity it’s linked with the type of diopters coming with… but I am afraid most of owners will complain of the out of focus effect. Maybe 43 degrees it too wide ? It’s an open question.. Another negative point is the DVR erratic bahaviours when time to time it’s not recording well all the FPV session. More the NTSC recording looks a bit choppy with 25fps only….

    PROS

    + Complete bundle
    + Great quality build
    + 43 degrees FOV
    + IPD ajustement
    + 2D/3D SBS
    + HDMIin
    + Builtin DVR
    + Frontal camera
    + Fan
    + Facial masks
    + Easy Vfreq scanning
    + Headtracker

    CONS

    – Central area blurred/out of focus ? Default diopter not adapted the normal vision case ?, too wide FOV ?
    – NTSC recording @25fps instead of 30fps
    – NTSC format partially cropped
    – No 16:9/4:3 aspect ratio selection
    – DVR module not booting sometimes
    – Some Corrupted DVR recordings reported (rarely/depends the quality of the microSD card)
    – Fan can’t be turn off completly manually

  13. In the valse of the new racers of the week, a novel addition with the HGLRC 120mm: https://www.banggood.com/HGLRC-HORNET-120mm-FPV-Racing-Drone-PNP-Omnibus-F4-OSD-13A-Blheli_S-ESC-5_8G-25100200350mW-VTX-p-1254621.html

Full carbon based with a thickness at least of 2mm for both arms and the central cage. Of course from now, there is a F4+OSD flight controller but with MPU6800 gyros, a good news for the stabilization after the SPCmaker 90NG fiasco. Strong 13A (20A@peak) BLheli_S/Dshot600 ESC … officially only supporting up to 3S…. but probably more.. The FPV rig is based on a super 600TVL CCD Super HAD II CCD sensor’s based camera and a 48CH VTX delivering up 350mW. The general architecture looks solid… A +5V/3A builtin BEC so no problem to feed both the FPV rig and the receiver. It’s a PNP machine so you will have to provide your own receiver and battery…. Seems a nice racer … but I would like to see a model with a builtin runcam swift micro … to record in 1080p@60 as well 🙂

  14. Remember the Popular MJX Bugs 3 ? then the B2W, a direct competitor of the Hubsan H501A… Then followed the Bugs 6 a 5.8G beginner cruizer…
Here is a new compagnon for the B6, i.e. the B8-pro in 300mm format: https://www.banggood.com/MJX-B8-Pro-Bugs-8-Pro-5_8G-FPV-Brushless-With-C5830-Camera-Racer-Drone-Quadcopter-RTF-p-1254331.html

The machine is still full plastic based … but shifts from a 2S to a 3S solution thanks to a 1300mAh/45C LiPo. Motors are still 2204 type… Still no open source flight controller installed…. it’s more a plug and fly machine spirit. Another major novelty is the addition of an acro flight mode… ideal for acrobatic flights. There is the type of 5.8G AIO FPV-camera… with a max power of 200mW. The bugs 8 still uses the 2-way radio protocol with basic telemetry alarm for the low voltage and out of control cases. The FPV signal and the control range should be ok under the radius of 200m…. It’s not really a racer, not a docile machine as well … but of the vibrations are ok and the sensivity of the FPV camera acceptable, can be a nice first FPV cruizer acrobatic able too.

  15. A return of an unsual design “+” design is proposed by Diatone with the GT-M3 model: https://www.banggood.com/Diatone-2018-GT-M3-Normal-Plus-110mm170mm-RC-Drone-FPV-Racing-F4-OSD-TBS-G1-600TVL-20A-BLHeli_S-PNP-p-1254008.html

According to advanced FPV pilots, the “+” offers even more faster top speed …. In another hand, the Field Of view is greatly impacted by the front motors. The electronic is updated to 2018 elements: a F4+OSD board with MIC20689 6-axis gyros/accelero… I really hope this MPU chip is softmounted… to avoid the hypersensitivity of this new generation of MPU (cf the SPCMaker 90NG problem). The FPV camera is obviously a CCD model…. ESC are rated up to 20A (BLheli_S/Dshot600) and motors are 1408/4000Kv….. The machine is boosted via a 4S setup … and should develop a beasty power…. We retrieve the same central aluminium cage protecting all the camera & electronic tower. The machine is only available in PNP edition actually.

  18. There is a new brushless compact FPV racer in 90mm size: https://www.banggood.com/Happymodel-Trainer90-FPV-Racing-RC-Drone-BNF-Omnibus-F3-OSD-5A-Blheli_S-ESC-5_8G-25mW-48CH-VTX-1S-p-1251252.html

The trainer 90 is full carbon based and come fully disassembled. Luckely, connectors are here everywhere and it should take 5-10min maximum to build the machine. Important remark: no propguard, no camera pod, no motor protection… and the flight controller is directly exposed… so .. the durability of the machine is clearly raised especially for 0703/0706 motors known to be fragile… the top part can pop up more easily. For the electronic, we have a basic F3+OSD flight controller, a 4-in-1 1S 5A BLheli_S/Dshot600 ESC board. The FPV rig is classic with a 600TVL CMOS 1/4″ sensor + 48CH/25mW 5.8G VTX. An originaly….. you can choose between 0703 15000Kv or 0706 type…. The weights will go from 24.7g to 30g… for the 0706 version more adapted for outdoors applications. I would say the 0703 can be more an indoors trainer while the 0706 more for outdoors…. Two choices of microreceiver are proposed: a FrSky D8 with RSSI or a FlySky AFHDS-2A. The battery is a LiHV model to boost even more performances.

    INTRODUCTION

The Eachine EX1 is a new compact brushless video plateform including a basic 1080P camera broadcasting a FPV signal with 5.8G WIFi link without any Electronic Stabilization (EIS). This EX1 is also branded by JJRC as the JJPro X3 HAX. The EX1 can be seen as a new competitor of the Hubsan H501A and the MJX BUG 2W. Dislike the H501A, here no advanced flight modes but basic GPS assistance and altitulde hold. Via the 5.8G link, a 300m video link is promised. Let’s have a look to this new RTF machine.

    BOX CONTENT

    null

    + 1 x Eachine EX1
    + 1 x 2S 2000mAh LiPo (with proprietary connexion)
    + 1 x 1080P/5.8G WIFi camera FPV module
    + 1 x Transmitter (using 4xAA batteries not included)
    + 2 x Spare props (1 CW, 1 CCW)
    + 1 x Wrench prop installer
    + 1 x Screwdriver
    + 1 x USB to microUSB cable
    + 1 x Smartphone holder
    + 1 x Instruction manual (English)

    null

    OVERVIEW

The EX1 machine is a little bit smaller than Hubsan H501A, i.e. 255mm versus 280mm. The body is highly profiled built into a very good plastic. As the H501A and the B2W, a 1080P/WiFi camera system is added this time not inside the main body but as an external module.

    -FRONT VIEW

    null

When the camera module is installed, the lens orientation is fixed with a negative angle about -10 degrees targetting the ground. No possibility to set this angle. Like the two others machines, motor’s pods are transparent with blue light on front and green on rear.

    -SIDE VIEW

    null

    No visible port ….

    null

    -REAR VIEW

    With the battery clipsed.
    null

    -UPPER VIEW

One unique button. A short press to turn on the EX1… Press and hold the button more than 3s to turn off.

    null

    -BOTTOM VIEW
    null

    -WEIGHT
With everything installed, the machine reaches close 367g….

    null

    Motors

    null

The machine welcomes independant ESC jailed just below motors inside the motor pod.

    null

220uF capacitor are installed on each ESC. It will help to clean the video signal as much as possible.

    null

1806 brushless motors are installed, the same type as for the H501A and the B2W.

    null

5mm shaft section. No problem to plug up to 6″ props and even the 6.3″ hubsan’s model.

    LiPo

A 2S proprietary 2000mAh LiPo without any indication of the current level of the charge.

    null

If the battery can easily inserted, you really need to press strongly the plastic tab to release it from the EX1.

A small microUSB port is here to recharge the battery.

    null

When plugged into a +5V USB port, a small blue light stays solid when charging

    null

The light turns off as soon as the charging is over

    Camera module

The 1080P camera is an external module super easy to clip/to remove. It offers a diversity system tuned on the 5.8G band.

    null

A wide angle is installed offering 120 degrees approximatively of Fielf Of View. Notice, the lens is not perfectly installed inside the casing and can move a bit… increasing microvibrations in recordings.

    null

You need to insert a microSD card class 10 minimum. It’s not possible to access to the card without removing the camera module. Maybe a good point in case of crash.. little risk to loose the memory card in this case.

    null

When the camera is not recording, after being activated at least one by pressing on the camera button, the module shows a red slow flashing light. When it’s recording, the red light blinks faster.

    null

To open the camera module, you need to remove two tiny screws latteraly with a thin screwdriver

    null

    null

We have a M7 lens thread

    null

The top blue WiFI PCB welcome two 5.8G antennas

    null

while the backside is the DVR module.

    null

A class 10 minimum is required

    null

1080p files are recorded with a huge compression factor and a low datarate … pixelization artefact will be huge

    null

    Here is raw video sample…..

The general quality is really poor and not acceptable for a 1080p module….

Another huge negative port, at least for a lot of Android users. The WiFi channels used to broadcast the video signal is the 149 and the 153

    null

Unfortunatly these channels are available only for the US & China

    null

It means by consequence most europeans android users, especially with last devices, the WiFi module won’t be visible ….. and no possibility to change these channels on the camera module itself. In this case, you can
    – Reinstall a fresh Android OS and select English(US) as location. Be sure to remove your SIM card if it’s a phone…. Complete the installation before to reinsert the SIM.
    – Try this modification with ADB: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel/themes/mod-wifi-country-code-fix-root-required-t3558044

There is a webinterface @192.168.1.10 where you can only update potentially a new camera firmware.

    Disassembling

It’s super easy to open the EX1. You will have to disconnect two cables linked with the GPS module to release the top canopy part.

    null

As you can see, the GPS module is shielded with a two layers copper material but the protection don’t feel completly the back cover…. Maybe a fix is to add more EMI paper there.

    null

On the main flight controller everything is connected via dedicaced plugs. The baromter is well protected with piece of foam. Generally everything look clean.

    null

In the bottom position, two free UARTs are available…. maybe there is a small hope than a firmware can be updated that way….

    null

    null

The 2.4G receiver is installed front. We have a XN297L and one unique antenna.

    null

It’s the first time I see a 2-way radio protocol based on the XN297L RFchip. In practice, there is a little chance that this protocol can be emulated via a nRF24L01+ for DeviationTX/OpenTX. To offer around 300m and more of control range, the datarate is probably 250kbit/s.

    null

    null

    Transmitter

The transmitter chassis is small, compact and light with good gimbals. One small LCD display is here to show all informations. In the field, you need a super good vision to real all values. More, with strong direct daylights, it’s almost impossible to read telemetry informations. You will need 4xAA batteries to feed the radio. Ni-Mh accu are working with.

    null

On the top right, one unique switch to select Altitude hold, GPS hold and RTH respectively.

The role of each button are explained as follow. What a pity, no basic logos printed directly on the transmitter. To engage the compass calibration procedure, you need to push the left stick in the lower-left position and the right stick in the top-right. The front lights will flash. Turn counter-clockwise relatively fast the machine installed horizontally then when you have solid green lights rear, noze up, turn one more CCW until blue front lights are here.

    null

The transmitter displays the quadcopter level of battery on the top left. Velocity, altitude and distance from the take-off location are printed.

    null

If you plan to use a tablet, it’s also possible to install DJI phantom tablet holder

    null

    null

    UNBOXING, ANALYSIS AND DEMO FLIGHT

After spending a couple of days to find how to have a compatible Android devices, I was able to test the EX1. Of course, the machine was perfectly calibrated directly in the field with sunny and windfree conditions. First things, when you connect the machine, if you don’t arm the machine within the first 1-2 minutes… it’s no more possible to arm… You will need to reboot all the system. By default, in altitude hold the machine take softly…. but I was not able to have a working auto-take off function… The altitulde hold is correct with relatively small altitude variations. The machine is silent too… I could expect a more noisy machine with relatively small props. The problem comes immediatly after you turn into the GPS mode … It’s not working !!!!!! the machine continues to drift as in altitude hold… You need to land and to re-take off to have a working GPS mode !!!! Weird…. More, for RTH it’s the same story, as soon as you engage the RTH, you can’t release it ….. so you have to be sure there will be a small deviation from the take off location….. and when the machine has landed… one more time you have to turn off everything to re-arm !!!!!

In altitde hold, the machine flies relatively well is pretty fast…. In GPS mode, despite receiving more than 13 satellites, you can feel the machine not super stable… even showing some Toilet Bowling effects…. 🙁 You can recalibrate the compass one more time…. weird mouvements are still here. Maybe the GPS module need to be more shielded… On your FPV display, you can feel a lot vibrations/jellos…. the camera sensor need to be more secured and probably the machine better well balanced props. It’s really disapointing…. In term of control range, I was able to go over 300m … with both the video & controls. As soon as you are loosing the transmission link, a RTH is engage and the machine climbs at 30m!!!! even if you were < 30m... Flight times are about 12min in average..... At last, I regret the absence of advanced flight modes..... no follow-me, no orbit, no path planning... we can also regret than important kinetic informations are not also displayed in the App.

    CONCLUSIONS

The conclusion will be easy to do…. I do not really advise this machine especially versus the Hubsan H501A & the Bug B2W… The EX1 is inferiour to every sectors: not stable machine in GPS mode, poor camera performances, a lot of jello, no advanced flight modes…. and incompatible with most europeans android devices….. Be sure than in 2018 will emerge similar machines but this time with EIS in the menu.

    PROS

    + Brushless quadcopter
    + Basic 1080p camera
    + GPS assistance
+ Telemetry informations sent on the radio
    + Good quality build
    + 300-350m of control/video range

    CONS

    – 5.8G Wifi link not compatible with most and recent european android devices
    – GPS stabilization not accurate (Toilet Bowling Effect)
    – Flight mode selection buggy (requires to reboot the machine)
    – Need to reboot the machine after a RTH
    – Poor camera performances: 20fps only, poor light sensitivity, color not accurate
    – A lot of Jello in the video
    – No flight informations displayed in the Appz, only via the transmitter
    – Flipped video by default
    – One unique 3-way switch to select all flight modes
    – Small transmitter LCD screen, almost invisible in daylight conditions
    – Auto take-off/landing buttons not working efficiently
    – RTH can’t be stopped mid-flight
    – No EIS
    – No advanced flight modes (Orbit mode, path planning, follow-me)

  21. In the last “Tiny” familly of KingKong, was missing an intermediate model, i.e. a 65mm machine but with 7mmx16mm motors.. Now the gap will be filled with the Tiny 6X: https://www.banggood.com/KINGKONGLDARC-TINY-6X-65mm-Racing-FPV-Drone-With-716-Brushed-Motors-Baced-on-F3-Flight-Controller-p-1250958.html

Notice than the KingKong brand will dissipear for the LDARC name. For this ne brushed FPV TinyWhoop machine we have a 65mm ducted full plastic based machine, 0716 coreless motors (17600 Kv), a F3 board without OSD and the same FPV rig as previously installed, a pretty good 800TVL CMOS cam + 16CH 25mW 5.8G VTX. The machine standalone is announced to be under 25g without the battery and receiver… so probably around 35g with everything installed. A 250mAh LiHV battery is now provided to boost even more performances. There are three version: one PNP, five BNF and complete RFT with a Futaba compatible radio. Interesting product … I just regret the absence of a builtin OSD….

  22. A new DJI product is announced, a compact smart brushed video quadcopter machine: https://www.banggood.com/DJI-Tello-with-5MP-HD-Camera-720P-WiFi-FPV-8D-Flips-Bounce-Mode-STEM-Coding-Compatible-Controller-VR-p-1249480.html

Propused with 8.5mmx20mm coreless motors with 3″ props, the total autonomy is announced to turn around 13min !!!! thanks to a 1S 1100mAh LiHV battery. There is a builtin WiFi 720 camera recording at 30fps and broadcasting the video signal up to 100m. The FOV is a bit narrow (83 degrees)…. More there is a small EIS !!!! to shoot stabilized 720p video!!!! (via the new Intel VPU). It’s not finished, the machine can stabilize its altitude via a barometer and a VPU !!! It’s impressive for a 80g machine. And it’s not over … there is a SDK to program easily some choregraphies with one or several units…. And cherry one the cake, it’s announced to be sold under 100USD !!!! Clearly an Hubsan’s killer. Wait & See as usual….

  23. Seems there is a new Eachine EV100 ultra low price FPV goggles competitor with the SJ-RG01: https://www.banggood.com/SJ-RG01-5_8G-48CH-Dual-Displays-Diversity-FPV-Video-Goggles-w-3_7V-1500mAh-Battery-DVR-p-1248340.html

Also sold under 100USD, we have a Goggles with a 5.8G 48CH diversity module (we have to check if it’s a true diversity system), a builtin DVR !!!!. Strange the dual display is announced to be 960×240…
Strange resolution…. Is it for one builtin LCD ? or 960×240+960×240 will give a a 960×480 ? Or in fact there is one unique display installed in the background covered with a binocular system ? …
No information also about the assocated Field Of View ? I would say .. it can’t be worse than the EV100 …. There is a small IPD ajustement also. Anyway it’s super cheap, a bit heavy …. …. Wait & See as usual…

  24. After the HBRC HB68, here is a new TinyWhoop brushless machine including a F3+OSD flight controller: https://www.banggood.com/HB64-64mm-1S-Brushless-RC-FPV-Racing-Drone-BNF-W-F3-OSD-5A-Dshot-25mW-48CH-600TVL-FS-RX2A-Receiver-p-1247915.html

It’s smaller (64mm) and lighter (<30g with the 260mah LiPo). It's a RTF solution with a builtin FlySky AFHDS-2A 2.4G microreceiver. In order to gain some weight, 0603 brushless motors have been prefered versus 0703. We have a F3 Omnibus with a builtin OSD, a 4-in-1 5A BLheli_S/Dshot 600 ESC board. The FPV rig is classic 600TVL CMOS 48CH 25mW AIO module. This little machine is powerfull enough looks the perfect winter indoors machine. I will try to grab for a review. As always, wait & see. null

  25. A new 3-in-1 AIO FPV camera is announced including also builtin 720p recordings: https://www.gearbest.com/receiver-transmitter/pp_1527671.html
The total weight is annouced to turn around 8g. Can be powered directly from a 1S source ([3.5V – 5.5V]). The module seems small enought to be installed even into < 100mm machines. The camera is basic CMOS model with 120 degrees of FOV. The output power of the 5.8G VTX can be switched between 0mW, 25mW and 200mW. With such kind of product there are some important questions which can be answered only by advanced testings: 1) What will be the extra latency introduced to encode in 720p the video stream and 2) Is a real genuine 720p source recorded or a NTSC one extended to 720p by interpolation ? As usual, Wait & See.... null
